This was my first-ever all black & white Super 8 film. In addition to the Super 8 film, I brought along my still camera, the Canon EOS 3, to shoot complimentary black & white photos. James Christianson was the principal photographer covering all the color stills with his Contax 645, you can view those here. Rj is a friend and colleague, being a talented photographer himself. Check out Rj's incredibly kind thoughts on my film as he featured it on his blog here. James & I will be joining Krista & Rj in Hawaii in 2012 for their destination wedding. Nothing intrigues me more than the human condition. Spending 5 minutes with a person gives you a glimpse into a world vastly different from yours, even if they are on the same socioeconomic plane. Most photos I take are selfish, to take me back to that moment when a conversation, or gesture, or moment impacts me. But in those vulnerable moments, a true personality can be recorded. Sometimes it's a full smile, sometimes it's a blank stare. But each time the one photograph embodies that part of the personality, or that emotion. For all the times I crave social situations and being surrounded by people, I have an equal need for solitude. In those times I try to digest and process, or just get a handle on how overwhelming the beauties and pressures of life can be when we actually look. How our individual problems can pale in comparison to the people close to us, and strangers and neighbors that surround us. I'm commissioned to observe, to interact, to share the human story, or to keep it private and intimate for the person I'm with. But everytime, the tangible endpiece is art and history...a moment and emotion. Photographs are the one thing in this life that appreciates in emotional value every day. That small film piece from your childhood, a photo of a loved one passed on, a photo of someone you haven't met. All are beyond any measure of value. My motivation and greatest honor is having a part of those moments. BIO Early in high school, my dad and I took a photography class at the Shutter Shack in Geneva, Illinois. We learned about composition, long exposures, and night time photography. I was hooked on image making from that point on. Still in high school, I began taking college photography class at night, and eventually earned my undergrad degree in Art & Design from Northern Michigan University. Weddings became a draw to me with my love for people and raw emotion. Since then I've had my work published on the web and in print, and still taking commissions for projects of every scale...as long as they involve people, a challenge, and a story. I normally shoot digitally, but have never strayed from the analog medium shooting stills in film, and also recording video in the vintage Super 8 medium. The emotional connection to an image is the purpose, but the tangible print makes it real and valuable. I try to be a superhero by choosing to give my time & talents for causes greater than my own. I enjoy photographing the kids at Denver's Bridge Project, I'm a collaborator with The Prop, I sit on the board of Denver's Mile High Photographers 600+ member group, and helped my wife put together a catalog selling Kibera Jewelry to benefit families in one of Africa's largest urban slums. Although I've been formally trained with a degree in Art & Design, I find nothing more exciting than pursuing learning on a daily basis.
